FALL: Figure Sculpting with Sophie Gibson Tuesdays, 6:30pm

This course will provide step-by-step instructions to help you construct your own cropped figure. the class will be sculpting from the same reference materials, although there is room for some variation in gesture, hairstyle, clothing, etc. in the final stages of your project. Over the course of eight 2.5 hour sessions, Sophie will guide you through the construction and assemblage of a hollow slab-built head, neck, torso, arms, and hands. The figures will become abstracted cylinders around the waist and will be cropped at the hips in order to provide a stable base for our firings. This course will not cover glazing of your pieces -- only sculpting. Our scale will be around 40% of a life size figure. 

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Open to all levels, although prior hand building experience is very helpful.
Materials Included: If you intend to fire your work at home, you can bring your clay. If we are to fire it, you need to purchase our clay we have about 10 cone 6 stoneware clay bodies to choose from. Feel free to bring any tools you already have or ou can buy some in our shop. We also have an unpredictable assortment of tools in th3e studio you re welcome to use. We also have banding wheels you can use.
Requirements: We will send out a materials list before the start of class.
Instructor: Sophie Gibson
Instructor Bio: Sophie Gibson is a ceramic sculptor, painter, and stop-motion animator who takes inspiration from people and natural environments. Sophie spent her undergraduate career in Providence, Rhode Island attending both the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University as a member of the Brown | RISD Dual Degree Program and earned a a B.F.A. in Illustration and B.A. in History. since then she has been an apprentice in the studio of internationally recognized ceramic sculptor Cristina Cordova and the studio manager at CityClay. Sophie currently maintains a studio practice at Visible Records building in Charlottesville.
