SUMMER 2024: Coil Built Figurative Sculpture with Sophie Gibson, Mondays/Wednesdays 6:30 - 9:00pm

Sophie Gibson is back in town to teach figure sculpting, but this time we will be employing a new building method. Rather than working from paper patterns and slabs, we will coil build our figurative compositions from the ground up. "Coil Building Figurative Sculptures" will emphasize designing supportive interior structures that work with the outer shell of the piece to bear weight without causing cracking. We will work at a medium scale, constructing compositions that are about 16'' tall.
Have you ever noticed how ancient Greek sculptures are often leaning on some kind of post or tree stump? In addition to suggesting environment / context, these sculpted elements are providing crucial structural support to the overall pose. During our first class each student will brainstorm and start planning a composition that includes a  figurative element collaged together with something else (a piece of furniture, an object from nature, an animal, etc.) This course marries physics, technical understandings of how clay works, and narrative/concept.
