SUMMER 2024: Carving a Solid Block of Clay with Randy Bill, Mondays, 10:00am

Traditional pottery skills focus primarily on modeling, turning and additive processes. Carving solid blocks of clay, known as the Japanese art of Kurinuki, is a reductive processes for developing form. We will explore traditional and hybrid forms of Kurinuki as we focus on spontaneous, asymmetrical, and dynamic form that can stand alone or be incorporated into hand-built and wheel-thrown forms. Projects may include cups, vases, and sculptures but students may choose to work on carving forms of their choosing. Weather permitting, we will have a pit firing either in the summer or later in the fall. 

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details: Carving vessels and sculptures will bring a greater understanding of working “in the round”, on spontaneous and dynamic form, and on the inherent qualities of clay all while feeding your curiosity and experimental nature
Materials Included: The class fee includes aprons, towels, and a shelf for your clay and supplies.
Requirements: Students MUST have good skills and a working knowledge of at least one ceramic process - hand building, wheel throwing or sculpture. To protect our kiln clay must be purchased from our shop. We have our own studio glazes for you to use, and we have a wide variety of commercials glazes available.. We do not allow any other glazes or underglazes on pots we are to fire for you. Your are welcome to bring your own tools or buy new ones in our shop.
Instructor: Randy Bill
Instructor Bio: Randy has a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a mixed media artist working primarily with clay and has taught ceramics for 30+ years. She is also a gardener and the founder of CityClay.
This class fee includes 9 class sessions, aprons, towels, and a shelf for you tools supplies and projects.
