SUMMER 2024 Workshop: Surface Design Extravaganza! with Malenka Luckett and Sarah Raffinan

Join Malenka and Sarah for a day of exploring different surface design techniques for adding color, texture, and pattern to your pots. We will demo a number of processes including sgraffito, slip trailing, water etching, and mishima -- plus more if time allows! This class is intended for both wheel and hand building students of all levels.
We will provide all of the tools and supplies needed for each of these techniques, as well as some sample leather hard tiles for you to experiment on. You are welcome to bring some of your own pieces to try these techniques on as well. Most techniques work best on leather hard pots that are already trimmed.

Instructor Bio: Malenka has been making pots at CityClay since 2015 where she is currently the Studio Manager. She has a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Ashland University and an MFA in Printmaking from Ohio State University where she also taught in the studio art foundations program. Outside of the studio, Malenka spends her time gardening, camping, and paddling the rivers of Central Virginia. Sarah Raffinan was a kid who lived for afterschool art classes and summer camps, but didn't discover a love of wheel throwing until trying to fulfill an art requirement in college. She continued to practice at community studios in Denver and Washington, DC as a young adult, but stepped away when she became a mother. Now she's thrilled to be working and creating at CityClay. You can often find her in the kiln room, where she tries her best to keep up with the constant flow of amazing student work.
