WINTER 2025: Basic Wheel with Sharon Torzala, 8 weeks, Tuesdays, 6:30 - 9:00pm; January 7 - February 25



Students will learn basic wheel skills while making lots of funny mistakes and big messes, there's no way around it. So come make bowls, cups, and vases, from start to finish, and don't forget to bring a sense of humor. It's just mud, which, through a bit of alchemy you will turn into something useful, cute, beautiful, or hilarious. So fun!


Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Basic wheel classes are for learning the process of throwing pots on an electric wheel. From wedging clay, centering, pulling walls, shaping, trimming, to decorating and glazing, you will gradually develop the skills you need to make food safe pottery you can use.
Materials Included: The class fee includes aprons, towels, and a shelf for your clay and supplies.
Requirements: To protect our kilns, clay must be purchased from our shop. We have our own studio glazes for you to use, and we have a wide variety of commercials glazes available. We do not allow any other glazes or underglazes on pots we are to fire for you. Your are welcome to bring your own tools or buy new ones in our shop. Beginners may borrow some studio tools when available, all others are asked to have their own.
Instructor: Sharon Torzala
Instructor Bio: Sharon Torzala has been working with clay for 20 years, starting when she was in graduate school for Occupational Therapy. She is most passionate about striving to create aesthetically pleasing functional pieces for everyday use which bring pleasure to the user. Sharon participated in a work study program at Pottery Northwest in Seattle, Washington where she learned how to operate kilns, make glazes, and how to recycle glazes and clay to help unload the burden on the environment. She moved to Charlottesville in 2021 where she remodeled her home and now has a home studio. Sharon started working at City Clay in January of 2022 and currently makes all of the studio glazes. When she is not working with clay she spends her time outdoors exploring the mountains of Central Virginia.

This 8-week class meets once a week and includes practice clay, aprons, towels, a shelf for supplies and projects.
