Fall 2025: Workshop: Throwing off the Hump, Sunday Morning, Nov. 23, with Jon Yager

Some of the most sought after pottery in the world is created by throwing off the hump. During this workshop with Jon Yager, students will learn the rich tradition of throwing pots off the hump and all the possibilities that working with this technique can create.
Jon began throwing off the hump 55 years ago. According to Jon, it is the easiest way to learn to throw. And it should, ideally, be a significant part of every potter’s throwing repertoire.
What you will learn in this three hour workshop will inform all aspects of your work on the wheel; enhancing not only the technical aspects of throwing, but also your relationship with the clay that you partner with.
This workshop is an opportunity to learn a significant amount in a short period of time, without committing to a full class.

| Instructor: | Jon Yager |
| Instructor Bio: | In our college art studio, I helped put on a weekend workshop by a Japanese potter. That weekend changed the course of my life. I never really intended to become a potter. I just couldn?t help it. The magic drew me on. I went through a traditional Japanese apprenticeship here in the U.S., fired in a three chamber wood kiln, bought acreage in Maine, cleared land and built buildings, made my own wheel, built wood and gas kilns, made my kiln shelves and posts, mixed my own clay and glazes. Pottery is the interplay of skill, nature and chance. And the goal is all along the path. No matter where you are in the journey, the rewards abound. |
