Winter 2026: Wheel, Basic, Thursday Evenings with Jon Yager, 8 weeks

This class will introduce students to the fundamentals of wheel throwing. We will begin with the cylinder—the essential form from which all vessels emerge. We will reference historical forms and practice the translation of seeing into making.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Basic wheel classes are for learning the process of throwing pots on an electric wheel. From wedging clay, centering, pulling walls, shaping, trimming, to decorating and glazing, you will gradually develop the skills you need to make food safe pottery you can use.
Materials Included: This 8-week class meets once a week and includes a shelf for your clay, tools and projects.
Requirements: To protect our kilns, clay must be purchased from our shop. We have our own studio glazes for you to use, and we have a wide variety of commercials glazes available. We do not allow any other glazes or underglazes on pots we are to fire for you. Your are welcome to bring your own tools or buy new ones in our shop. Beginners may borrow some studio tools when available, all others are asked to have their own.
Instructor: Jon Yager
Instructor Bio: In our college art studio, I helped put on a weekend workshop by a Japanese potter. That weekend changed the course of my life. I never really intended to become a potter. I just couldn't help it. The magic drew me on. I went through a traditional Japanese apprenticeship here in the U.S., fired in a three chamber wood kiln, bought acreage in Maine, cleared land and built buildings, made my own wheel, built wood and gas kilns, made my kiln shelves and posts, mixed my own clay and glazes. Pottery is the interplay of skill, nature and chance. And the goal is all along the path. No matter where you are in the journey, the rewards abound.
