Summer 2019—Sculpture with Chad Coffman, T 6:30-9:00, 10 weeks
New students will explore both the art of constructing sculptural pieces as well as the methods of incorporating sculptural elements into their current work. They will learn how to mimic textures and forms, and how to blend and differentiate them. Through coil building, carving, and slab work, we will construct surface details, low-relief sculptures, and, finally, a free-standing, in-the-round sculpture. Returning students will build on these skills through new projects. Whether students are wheel throwers, hand builders, or full-fledged sculptors, this class will cater to adding new dimensions to their work. Some experience with clay is best, but beginners are welcome in this class.
Students will need some supplies for this class. Beginning students should buy the 630 White Stoneware the first day of class, others may choose from the other options from the shop. New students may use our studio tools or buy what is needed in the shop. Check with your teacher the first night for the tools you will need.
To protect our kilns, all clay and commercial glazes must be purchased from our shop. The price of our clays includes all the firings and the use of our dipping glazes. Commercial glazes are only offered as an option. Our shop has expanded with a wide range of tools, and mid-range clays and glazes. Special thanks to Baltimore and Richmond Clayworks for their support and help with our shop. The sale of our products helps support the existence of this studio.
